Daly
scores four on opening day
by Patrick Rowley (20.9.2009)
Matt Daly, a key member of England’s gold medal winning
team at the recent European Championships, started the new
England League season by converting four penalty corners to
give his club Surbiton a 4-3 away over Bowdon.
Surbiton trailed 3-1 a half time but Daly scored all the second
half goals.
Three other gold medallists were among the goals. Simon Mantell
and Jonty Clarke picked up Reading’s goals in a 2-0
home win over a far from outclassed Hampstead side in a match
in which goalkeepers Nic Brothers of Reading and the England
junior Ian Scanlon were outstanding.
England’s new full back Richard Smith scored Loughborough
Students first goal in his side’s surprise 4-2 win over
Beeston.
East Grinstead, champions for the first time last winter,
came from behind to win 4-3 on the ground of former champions
Cannock.
Their new signing, South African international Gareth Carr,
despatched two corners.
