ARGENTINA
SPOIL ENGLAND DREAM
by
Pat Rowley (15.8.2009)
England
were dramatically beaten 1-0 by Argentina in the semi-finals
of the Women’s World Junior Cup at Harvard University
in Boston.
The only goal was scored with just over one minute of extra
time left on the clock. Argentina’s inside left, Carla
Dupuy lashed a shot high
past Clifton’s Gemma Ible, England’s excellent
goalkeeper.
England, never previously higher than 7th, still have the
prospect of collecting a first ever medal of either sex at
junior (Under 21) level
when they play Korea, the 2005 champions, in the bronze medal
match this evening.
It will be England’s second clash with the Koreans who
salvaged a 2-2 draw on the second day of the championship
with a last minute goal
after England had led 2-0.
England’s men’s team completed a superb double
(8-0 & 4-0) over France at Bisham a week before both countries
take part in the men’s and women’s European Cup
at Amsterdam.
