SHERER'S
GOAL ENOUGH
by

A
goal by Durham University’s Loren Sherer was enough
to give England a 1-0 win over India in their fourth match
at the Women’s Junior World Cup at Boston, Massachusetts.
They remain unbeaten, with three wins and a draw, and heading
for their highest ever ranking in the four yearly event.
England conceded early corners but, in the 7th minute, Sherer
met a cross to place her shot past the Indian goalkeeper.
There were not a lot of scoring chances after that and England
had to survive a nervy last ten minutes.
“India is an extremely skilful team but the girls dug
in and did the defensive work incredibly well”, said
assistant Coach Martin Rodgers.
Wales collected the bronze medals on the final day of the
European Trophy at Wrexham, defeating Czech Republic 5-2.
Southgate’s Rick Gay scored twice.
Scotland, like Wales, made sure of taking part in the 2010
World Cup qualifiers later this year by finishing fifth. Iain
Scholefield and
Mark Ralph scored in their 2-1 win over Belarus.
