Ladies came as close as anyone to ending Bowdon’s 100
per cent record but they were denied by their nemesis, former
GB and England international Tina Cullen, who scored the winner
to condemn them to their seventh defeat of the season.
Slough skipper Fiona Greenham described their first half performance
as “our best all season: we passed and moved the ball
around well, defended deeper to compress the space behind
and deserved our half-time lead.”
But Bowdon shaded the second period, benefiting from a full
squad while Slough’s permutations were limited by having
only one outfield substitute.
Both sides won just three penalty corners and none were converted
with their main corner striker Jane Smith’s absence
(skiing) sorely missed by Slough.
Lauren Penny scored her 11th goal to open the scoring midway
through the first half, completing a left-side move from close
range.
Bowdon’s equaliser came two minutes after the interval
when Sara-Jo Coakley punished a defensive mistake and Cullen’s
winner in the 57th minute followed a midfield turnover and
counter-attack, ending with her steering the ball home.
