JACKSON
STRIKES AGAIN
by Patrick Rowley (19.12.2009)
Ashley Jackson, the World Hockey’s Young Player of the
Year, scored his second hat-trick for England’s indoor
team against Scotland to ensure they won the four test series
at Paisley before the final match today.
Jackson followed his four in Friday’s 7-5 win, with
the first three goals in a 4-2 win in the third match. The
second was drawn 3-3.
Great Britain women’s first outing since finishing fifth
the Beijing Olympics, a five test series at Salta in Argentina,
ended sadly with
the final test lost and key player Crista Cullen ending up
in hospital.
Britain were beaten 3-1 by Argentina, the world’s second
ranked team, after trailing 3-0 at half time.
Cullen scored Britain’s goal but, soon after, suffered
a hefty blow to her face and had to leave the field. She was
sent to hospital for
further medical examination.
Argentina converted three corners between the 19th and 26th
minutes, Noel Barrionuevo getting two of them.
Although clearly a tired side, Britain played far better in
the second half with Cullen putting the final touch at a corner
after strong play
by Alex Danson.
Britain’s rally was not helped when both Nicola White
and Sally Walton received temporary suspensions.
Britain who beat Argentina 2-1 on Friday, lost the test series
4-1.
